While stores are the most visible part of our business, a significant behind the scenes management and business operations network ensures we are able to serve our millions of customers each and every day. With eleven streams to choose from, there are many career directions you can take, but you won't be locked into one stream for your whole career. 

Business Consulting 

Develop deep analytical, decision-making, stakeholder management and judgement skills as you help to plot strategies for one of the largest, most complex and transformational retail businesses in Australia. 

This is 2 year program based at our Sydney office. 

Degree Requirement: Bachelor of Commerce, Law, Engineering, or Business.

Eddie Robinson, Business Consulting Graduate a graduate in the strategy team I regularly work with senior leaders within Woolworths and problem solve for the biggest challenges in Australian retail. The mentoring and training from team members who have previously worked at top tier consulting firms ensures that I'm equipped and ready to deal with these challenges. 

Within my first year I was privileged to work with the General Manager of BWS and General Manager of Woolworths Digital. As part of my role, I was responsible for segmenting our customers and product range to ensure we had the right offer in the right place, which led to a restructure of how liquor is assigned to stores. I have also conducted extensive market research and financial modelling to highlight the risk of new competitors entering into the Australian market, which supported investment into bold new strategies in Woolworths' eCommerce business. The work was both meaningful and impactful, with the projects operating in the billions of dollars and touching millions of customers. 

Despite only just graduating from university, I was able to add value due to the world class training delivered by Woolworths' in-house strategy team and graduate program. It was a steep learning curve, but for a budding consultant it was the best place to start my career.

As a graduate in the Business Consulting stream, you will have the opportunity to work on some of Woolworths' most important strategic initiatives, be exposed to senior business leaders and make a meaningful contribution from Day 1.

One of the key differences with starting a career at a consulting firm is that at Woolworths, you will get to form long lasting relationships with people in the business and see the project through from strategy formulation to execution. The breadth of projects on offer is diverse and in my time at Woolworths, I have worked on topics including organisation design, ranging strategy, inventory and format development just to name a few.

I've had the privilege of working closely with one of our graduates over the last twelve months. She created a heat map tool that was used by senior management to make promotional decisions and played an integral role in supporting the sale process of one of our businesses. As a graduate, you will be given a lot of responsibility and have the opportunity to learn from our team of experienced consultants drawn from the top tier consulting firms from across the globe.  


Woolworths Group Finance Graduate program has been structured to ensure our graduates have a broad based commercial and retail experience with a focus on learning. Throughout the three year program you will have the opportunity to work across a variety of finance teams within business units and support functions. 

Within the first year of the program you will have the opportunity to get exposure to technical accounting in our Financial Control Office based in Adelaide. For the remainder of the program you will be based primarily at our Norwest Support Office working with commercial, support and operations finance teams. 

You will be supported throughout the program to complete your CA or CPA qualification. In addition to your formal accreditation, you will complete rotation specific learning objectives that will develop your commercial and business acumen. 

Degree Requirements: Bachelor of Business (major in Accounting) or Commerce (major in Accounting)

The Woolworths graduate program's balance of financial and commercial exposure was the major influencing factor when I was considering graduate roles. In my first year, I was able to learn and develop a strong foundation in financial accounting which underpinned the commercial and strategic work I was involved in my second and third years. The program allowed me to collaborate with many stakeholders within the Woolworths Group as a finance business partner and gain a robust understanding in operations, reporting, analysis and planning. 


The broad exposure working in a trading business, a corporate finance team and financial accounting team allowed me to complete the program with end to end understanding of the finance function. Transitioning into a permanent role was seamless given the broad experience and knowledge I had acquired. The retail and commercial experience I gained in the program set me up for my current role as Commercial Manager of Langton's and Winemarket.

joe .jpgMy career with Woolworths Group started in December 2010 in a casual position with BWS on the Gold Coast. Working while completing my studies, I was promoted to a permanent part-time position before being accepted into the Finance Graduate program in Sydney for commencement in February 2014. 

My experience as a Finance Graduate within Woolworths Group has been exciting, empowering and educational. Working across a range of areas from Property Finance to Supply Chain Solutions. Within these roles, I have worked across Store Operations, Corporate Finance and Capital Management allowing me to broaden my experience base to develop my commercial acumen and business partnering skills. 

My on the job learning was supported by formal training sessions where exposure to senior business leaders was provided and networking encouraged. 

The skills I developed over the 3 years of my program have equipped me to accept a role in Commercial Finance, supporting business partners to make billion dollar decisions. 

Human Resources

Within your graduate stream, you’ll develop sound expertise in an area directly related to your professional ambitions. You will rotate to a new department or project every few months. Both your managers and graduate champions will support you through your rotations, but it’s up to you to make the decisions on how you develop your career. Actively networking and putting your hand up for projects and opportunities that particularly interest you are strongly encouraged. The HR stream develops dynamic HR professionals to support Australia’s biggest employer (of 200,000 people). You will gain diverse experience across the the total HR function from shared services through business partnering and our centre of expertise/divisional projects.

This is a two year program with the first year being Brisbane based. The potential exists for the second year rotations to be hosted interstate.  Any degree type with a HR major will be considered.

When I started to look at applying for different graduate programs, I hadn’t thought about Woolworths as a place I could begin my career. When most people think of Woolworths, they think of the supermarkets and I was no different. Having now spent a year on the graduate program, I can’t begin to describe how wrong I was!

Initially, the program provides you with a very solid understanding of the company and how the stores operate, then as you start your rotations, you have the opportunity to create large professional networks and develop your technical skills as you rotate through Talent Acquisition, Employment Relations, Talent Development, Business Partnering and more. While this may sound like any other HR graduate program, it’s the experiences that really set it apart and provide you with the ultimate platform to launch your career.

So far, I’ve created and managed a portion of an onboarding program for over 160 new employees in the People Services division, I have helped create and facilitate HR development sessions to upskill store management, I’ve held assessment centres to select and then train staff for a new business venture within the general merchandise division and I’ve been the state Remuneration & Reward champion through the last Performance & Reward cycle.

At the moment, I am working on a project that will establish Woolworths Careers on various social mediums for the brand new Strategic Sourcing division. I had to put together and present a business case to the head of Talent Acquisition & Development to get approval.

The professional development and large networks you build are just the tip of the iceberg, it’s the level of responsibility you are granted in such a short amount of time is what I believe sets you up for a great leadership experience.

Information Technology

Technology is a game changer for any retail organisation and this is no different for Woolworths. There is no aspect of the Woolworths business that isn't touched by technology every day. From online shopping and mobile applications, to analytics and customising product offerings for customers, when you start your career with Woolworths IT, you will be signing up to transform the customer experience through technology. This is a 2 year program, based in Sydney.

Supply Chain

Supply Chain is at the heart of Woolworths. It's our job to make sure the millions of customers who pick Woolies each week can get the products they want - when, where and how they want them. 

As a Supply Chain Graduate, you'll see first hand what it takes to lead a large and complex supply chain operation for one of Australia's most iconic brands. So whatever your passion, the Woolworths Group Supply Chain Graduate program is the perfect way to launch your retail career. 

This is a 2 year program, based in Sydney, NSW.

Cut your teeth on the widest variety of deals, and be involved in some of the largest procurement buying decisions in corporate Australia. The procurement stream develops both breadth and depth in capability through exposure to our vast range of business requirements and customer lines.

This is a 2 year program, based in Sydney.

Paul Barber, Head of Reporting and Analytics 

If you are interested in learning and applying the craft of Procurement in a fast paced retail environment for one of the largest retailers globally, let alone Australia & New Zealand, then this program is for you. 

In line with our value "Every Cent Counts", our Group Procurement ream actively supports the business to reduce cost and maximise operating efficiency. 

Across a multi-billion dollar non-trade goods & services spend portfolio, we work on a diverse range of initiatives touching everything from store construction and fit-out to marketing and in-store packaging. 

A 2-year structured rotation program has been developed for our Procurement graduates, the graduates will be provided with additional support to assist them in successfully delivering their own projects by applying the new skills that they have learnt. 

With targeted mentoring from our Procurement Leadership team, the graduates will be provided with additional support to assist them in successfully delivering their own projects by applying the new skills that they have learnt. 

By invitation only, high performing graduates may be offered a 3rd year rotation to work directly with the General Manager Group Procurement on strategic projects along with the potential for an overseas posting in one of out global sourcing offices. 

Product Development and Quality Assurance

Our product development team ensure we deliver the right product using technical and financial specs to meet customer expectations, while our quality assurance team makes certain that only safe, compliant and fit for purpose products make it to the shelf. Your passion for quality products comes to life through experiences in global sourcing, manufacturing and technical.

This is a 2 year program, based in Sydney.

Degree Requirements: Bachelor of Science (Food Technology) or Food Science

I've been working in the drinks team where I'm responsible for changes in our sourcing model that will have a tangible benefit. We are exploring how we source our raw materials to improve consistency of product and price and build our manufacturing expertise. This has given me a sense of empowerment as I work with teams across the business and the world. 

I've got the support of my team to tackle each day's challenges as they come and I've learnt so much in the last year about the business, the industry and myself. 

The program has been amazing with the number of opportunities I've had including: 

  • spending time in stores - getting a first hand understanding of what challenges products will face

David Loveridge the course of the last 12 months, the Product Development & Quality Assurance Graduate Program has exposed me to so much of the Woolworths business - an experience like no other, and the opportunities are endless. 

After getting a hands-on experience at a store level, we've had the opportunity to explore the Own Brand space known as "FoodCo" from all angles in the business unit; Quality Assurance, Product Development, Customer Experience, Packaging, Project Planning and Category Planning (Customer Insights). 

Woolworths collaborates with domestic and international suppliers to source and manufacture the best products possible, across the entire supermarket. Not only do we look for opportunities to bring better value to our shelves, we are constantly scanning the global market for inspiration on new products. 

Part of the program is being accountable for projects that impact nearly 1000 stores across the nation. I've recently finished a 10-week relief in a Planning role (project management), where I was responsible for the Artwork production of hundreds of projects across the Meat, Bakery and Fresh Produce space. This experience will be invaluable as I progress in my career, and will continue to work alongside these teams in various capacities. 

The program offers many opportunities to network, create and collaborate on innovative products, which are targeted to the needs of our customers. There is also a strong cultural focus on having support available to graduates and ensuring all employees are given the opportunities to develop professionally. 


The Woolworths Property team provides the strategy and management that goes into purchasing, development, maintenance and repair of a fleet of over 3,000 stores and distribution centres. Develop your capacity to balance new developments , refurbishment, asset management and financing across this massive and complex portfolio. 

This is a 2 year program, based in Sydney.

Working for Australia's largest retail developer - and an iconic Australian brand - means that your day-to-day work is fast-paced, large scale and topical. 

The people who guide your development are some of the best  in their field and the experiences and knowledge they impart provides a strong platform on which to develop your own skills. 

The Property Team ensures that your experience is well-rounded by facilitating four 6-month rotations in Asset Management, Non-retail Development, Retail Development, and Property Management. During my time in Asset Management, I was exposed to a dynamic and diversified property portfolio and carried out tasks in investment management, capital transactions and leasing. Now, as I complete my rotation in Non-retail Development, I leave behind a number of projects including the Melbourne South Regional Distribution Centre; a highly automated state-of-the-art facility which will service large swaths of the state. 

As I progress through the second half of my program I look forward to continuing to cater to our customers & their needs through refurbishing and developing our neighbourhood shopping centres, before completing the program with the Property Managers in executing our strategy to effectively maintain and guide Woolworths' property portfolio. 


Nathan Dundovic, Assistant Development Manager (Former Property Graduate)

When looking at possible career paths at the end of my University studies I came across the Woolworths Property Graduate Program. The program involved rotating through various areas of the Property team and I am only now beginning to fully comprehend the sheer magnitude of Woolworths' property dealings. The four rotations included Asset Management, Property Management and both Retail and Non Retail Development. 

Working within the Property team helps you not only develop property specific skills, but also gives you invaluable insight and experience into the company as a whole. From on the job training through to regular graduate workshops, the program aids in the development of commercial and retail property based skills, while also providing opportunities for networking across all areas of the business. 

One particular highlight for me during my time on the program was during my Retail Development rotation where I assisted the team in delivering the Vincentia Marketplace Shopping Centre. The team were very supportive and assigned me various tasks and responsibilities throughout the project. The exposure I received in this short period was integral to my development, allowing me to fully grasp what working in property development entailed. The satisfaction and pride I gain when I visit the centre and see the impact it has had on the community is something that will last with me for a long time. 

After 2 years on the program I have now accepted a role as an Assistant Development Manager within the Retail Development team and I am looking forward to continuing my development at the company for many years to come. 

Commercial Buying

With millions of customers who choose Woolworths each week, our buying team is an integral part of our business. They are responsible for ensuring our customers get the products they want at great prices. Our team negotiates with small and large suppliers around the world to provide the greatest range, price, promotions and distribution of products to all our stores and customers everyday. 

As a Commercial Buying graduate, some of the opportunities we offer include rotations through a range of roles in Fresh Food, Long Life, Pricing, Analytics, Range and Space teams, as well as our FoodCo business where we develop and launch cost effective, unique products under the Woolworths Own and Exclusive brands. You will get to experience end-to-end Store Operations to round out your knowledge and equip you with all of the skills and expertise required to shape, transform and drive the retail business forward.

Seyda Sismanoglu, Assistant Category Manager - Cosmetics the Woolworths Buying Graduate Program I have had a jam-packed experience across numerous areas of the business including rotations in Store Operations, Product Development, Strategy, Replenishment and Buying. 

During one particular rotation as a Product Developer in the Meat Buying team, I was given the opportunity to relaunch the Christmas poultry range and also manage some New Product Development for Own Brand Poultry products resulting in millions on incremental sales each year. 

By the end of my program, I had built an extensive set of skills and knowledge that allowed for a smooth transition into my final rotation as an Assistant Category Manager in the Health, Beauty and Baby Buying team. I played a vital role in this team as any decision I made has the potential to affect millions of customers we serve in our 950 stores each week. I was responsible for the promotional plan for the Baby category, building strong relationships and negotiating with suppliers of big brands such as Huggies and Nestle, while also being accountable for the sales and profit result of this multimillion dollar category each week.
